Iron? Vitamin D? Choline? Finding The Right Prenatal Supplement Sounds Like A Daunting Process.

It's undeniable that the market is flooded with prenatal supplements, each claiming to be the best. However, this raises the question of – which of these options is right for me? Choosing a prenatal supplement can be confusing and overwhelming, but it doesn't need to be! Getting your diet and supplement regimen right is crucial for your fertility and to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Every person has different needs when it comes to fertility and pregnancy supplements and it's important that you take one specifically suited to you. Various factors such as medical history, family background, age, blood analysis, and body size are important to consider when determining your requirement for specific prenatal vitamins or minerals.

Whatever you do, don't procrastinate starting on a prenatal any longer! Your prenatal supplement should be started atleast 3 months prior to conception. And did you know, that some people trying to conceive with certain medical histories require up to 10 times more folic acid than the rest of the population from pre-conception through to the end of your first trimester?!Taking a prenatal supplement prevents nutrient deficiencies and builds up stores in your body, helping to avoid neural tube defects such as spina bifida (FSANZ, 2016) in your unborn baby.

What could be impacting on your supplement needs?

01

Medical history

Women with Coeliac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis) or those who’ve had bariatric or weight loss surgery require more folic acid due to potentially reduced absorbance in the gut (RANZCOG guideline, 2017).

02

Dietary patterns

Are you vegan, plant-based or vegetarian, or just don’t like fish, seafood or meat? This could influence your prenatal supplement recommendation, including which products meet your preferences and nutrient requirements.

03

Weight/ BMI

Women with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 may need additional folic acid to support a healthy pregnancy (RANZCOG guideline, 2017).

04

If you're already pregnant

During each trimester, you have different nutritional demands (and symptoms, too), so let a fertility and pregnancy dietitian tailor your supplementation to you and your current needs to ensure you’re nourished and comfortable (bye bye yucky supplement side effects of constipation and nausea!)

05

Other factors

We’ll ask you additional questions about your health, lifestyle, and medical history and goals to create a tailored plan for you and your needs.
